Biggest trends for cannabis flower jars

by | Apr 14, 2025

Packaging quality impacts everything from how fresh your buds stay to what customers think and whether you meet regulations. To hit every mark, brands can’t go wrong with a cannabis flower jar as their main packaging type for the smokable parts of the plant.

Jars are not created equal, though. Adopting the right one means getting into the nitty-gritty of materials, how to keep your nugs fresh, and what’s happening in the market.

In this blog, we’ll cover what jars can be made of, how sealing works, freshness protection, compliance must-haves, and key cannabis flower jar packaging trends that brands should follow to boost the appeal of their products.

Glass vs. plastic

Cannabis flower jar packaging trends involve both glass and plastic jars. Here are the differences between the materials and what can work better for your buds.

Glass jars

Glass (usually soda-lime) is pretty inert, meaning it can’t damage your flower or leach any chemicals. It keeps the original terpene profile and taste.

Glass does a fantastic job of warding off oxygen and moisture to keep your nugs stable in the long term (of course, if your packaging has a good seal). While regular clear glass can’t do much against UV rays, you can get an amber, green, or opaque glass type that will block those degrading rays.

There’s also something about the weight and look of glass that tells customers they’re getting an amazing flower to smoke. However, this material is heavier (which hits your shipping costs), may break, and usually costs more than plastic when creating jars.

Plastic jars

You can use:

  • PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which is clear and good at keeping oxygen and other elements at bay.
  • PP (polypropylene), which is often used for lids because it’s stiff and can be made with hinges, or for cannabis flower jars that must handle more heat.
  • HDPE (high-density polyethylene), which is usually opaque and enhanced with the most effective moisture barrier.

While plastic isn’t generally as impermeable as glass, the technology has come a long way. With advancements and barrier solutions like EVOH layers, you can reinforce the protective features of your flower packages. Always check specific barrier ratings (OTR and WVTR) for the plastic you’re considering.

A cannabis flower plastic jar won’t shatter easily and is way lighter than glass, which allows you to trim shipping costs and reduce the risk of breakage. You can mold plastics into a range of unique shapes and adopt many aesthetic finishes.

However, different plastics have different levels of chemical resistance. Some grades may not be great at protecting your buds when your jars are exposed to chemical substances. Also, plastic must be food-grade and BPA-free.

The science of staying fresh: Seals and preservation

A cannabis flower jar is only as good as the seal it comes with. Keeping your nugs fresh means controlling what’s going on inside.

Airtight seals

Oxygen can wreak havoc on cannabinoids and terpenes through oxidation. To prevent that, you can use liners inside the caps (foam liners like F217) or induction seals. The latter creates a tight, tamper-evident seal by bonding a foil layer to the jar’s opening. Pressure-sensitive liners are simpler but might not be as robust.

Moisture control

Cannabis flower requires a specific environment to stay just right for consumption. If moisture levels are too high, mold may develop. Too low, and it will lose terpenes and become harsh. While the WVTR of the jar material plays a part, a good seal is the main thing that helps maintain the initial RH of the flower or what you introduce with humidity control packs.

UV protection

UV light is the nemesis of cannabinoids. Opaque materials (plastic or coated glass) or dark glass (amber is good for UV filtering) are super-important, especially if your nugs will be presented under retail lights.

What’s hot among cannabis flower jar trends

Beyond just performing its protective function, your packaging should also reflect what’s happening in the market. Flower cannabis jars for brands that operate in this industry carve out plenty of space for trendy designs and upgrades.

To keep up with the demand, you can:

  • Go for increased recycled content in glass or plastic
  • Adopt biodegradable/compostable options
  • Prioritize packaging that’s easy to recycle (made from just one material)
  • Use more lightweight material in the first place

Other trends include simple lines, sophisticated fonts, unique finishes (soft-touch, matte), and more subtle colors that signal premium quality. For a distinguishing touch, you can adopt unique jar shapes (which is easier with plastic because you can use custom molds), colors, and cool decoration techniques – like ceramic coating on glass, detailed printing, or embossing/debossing.

Things like built-in spots for humidity control packs, magnifying lids, or special ways to open the jar are starting to pop up.

Rules and regulations

Your packaging has to meet strict regulations, depending on the state:

  • Child-resistance (CR). Lots of markets require CR closures for cannabis buds. These have specific mechanisms (like push-and-turn or squeeze-and-turn) that meet federal safety standards (CFR Title 16, Part 1700). The whole package – the jar and the lid – has to work together as a compliant system.
  • Tamper-evident features. Induction seals, shrink bands, and other ways to show if a jar has been opened are often required or highly recommended for consumer safety and to protect your brand.

More regulations may apply in your state.
