California cannabis packaging: a practical design guide

Updated

California cannabis packaging should be planned around the product's final retail form. Start with the immediate container and work outward to any label, sleeve, carton, or retail handling requirement. A decorative outer box does not automatically resolve the requirements of the package inside it.

Use the DCC's current packaging guidance

The Department of Cannabis Control's final-form packaging guidance addresses tamper evidence, child resistance, protection from contamination, and resealability for multiple servings. Edible packaging has opacity requirements with a specified exception for glass beverage containers. Designs cannot appeal to children. The applicable child-resistance configuration depends on the product and package; obtain documentation for the actual format rather than assuming a familiar-looking closure qualifies.

Packaging and labeling are related but separate checks. For flower and pre-roll projects, the DCC's non-manufactured product labeling guidance explains panel information and the cannabis symbol, including requirements when the immediate container can be separated from an outer package. Manufactured products require their own labeling review.

Resolve structure before decoration

Use the dimensions of the actual product and closure to compare formats. Ask for a dieline that identifies folds, glue areas, seams, and usable print surfaces. If a tamper feature tears away, check what information remains after opening. If a label crosses a curved surface, inspect its full reading path on an assembled sample.

A useful packaging brief separates structural decisions from artwork decisions. The structural portion records the container, closure, materials, and intended fill. The artwork portion records the approved copy, symbol files, product variants, and spaces reserved for changing batch information.

Approve the package as a system

Review the jar and carton together, or the pouch with its final label in place. Check that the same product name and quantity appear wherever intended and that variable fields will not be covered by a seal or retail sticker. Scan any digital links from the finished sample, not just the PDF.

Keep a release record containing the approved file version, reviewer, date, and corresponding physical specification. A change in container size should trigger a new layout check even when the front artwork looks unchanged.
